Sometimes, you have to do what you love…
Who I am…
The Suburban Workshop is owned and managed by me, Graham, a furniture maker, wood turner, and restorer based in suburban south west London, in Kingston Upon Thames. Most of my furniture is made to commission or made speculatively, using a combination of traditional and modern joinery techniques. The process of furniture making and wood turning is something I really enjoy, exposing the natural beauty hidden inside a lump of wood is a true voyage of discovery.
My story…
For the majority of my working life, I’ve managed IT projects in the City of London for the financial services industry. While this has given me a challenging and varied career, it didn't give me the creative outlet I have craved. I've always enjoyed working with my hands, and as soon as space permitted I started creating a home workshop.
In 2022 I took the plunge and enrolled on a full time furniture making course with John Lloyd Fine Furniture in Sussex. If you’re thinking of doing the same thing, I’d heartily recommend it - I learned a great deal, from traditional and modern joinery techniques, through to furniture restoration and French polishing.
At The Suburban Workshop I make freestanding bespoke furniture, wooden homeware such as cheese boards, charcuterie boards, chopping boards, wooden bowls, and I restore and repair antique and vintage furniture.
If you have an idea for some handmade furniture you’d like to discuss, or if you have some furniture you’d like to be repaired and restored to its former glory, get in touch and we can arrange an initial consultation.
